My name is Cindy Rushton. I homeschooled my children
from their toddler years until both graduated. One of my biggest
convictions as a homeschool mom is that I believe that you are only as

Artsy Animals Learn All About the Arts
(Part One)
March 2 to April 6 from
9:00 to 9:40. Ages 4 through 7
Lesson One -Artsy
Animals Around the House
Children use fine motor skills
and learn basic shapes doing a composition with a dog, a cat, a bird
and a fish picture. We talk about habitat and hot colors, cool
colors. We look at master artists Matisse “The Red Room,” and
Mary Cassatt. We also learn about musical instruments and make
a puppet.
Lesson Two - Artsy
Animals in the Ocean
Children use fine motor skills to
create a lovely under the ocean picture learning basic shapes. We
make a tall ship learning horizontal, vertical and diagonal
lines. We talk about habitat and learn about musical
instruments on the tall ships. Our master artists are Winslow
Homer and Washington Allston. We listen to a sea song.
Lesson Three - Artsy
Animals in the Jungle
Children learn drawing skills
creating animals seen in a zoo. We make zebras, giraffes, and
rhinos, elephants and monkeys. We learn about patterns in
nature. We also learn hot colors and cool colors. Our
master artists are Rousseau, Hicks, and Gauguin. We make a
drum and learn about rhythm.
Lesson Four - Artsy
Animals in the Desert
Children learn horizon line,
foreground and background in a desert picture. Children make a
jackrabbit, a spider, a lizard and more. Our master artists
are Remington and Russell. We also listen to “The Flight of
the Bumblebee.”
Lesson Five - Artsy
Animals in the Garden
Children learn about insects like
butterflies and bees that you could find in a garden. We look
at master artists Monet, Hagemeister, and Renoir. We
make a garden picture and learn about radial lines, patterns, and
symmetry. We learn how to make tissue paper flowers for our
picture and how to make a butterfly from the letter “B.” We
also draw insects and learn about primary colors.
Lesson Six - Artsy
Animals in the River
Children learn about a visual
rhythm and pastel colors. Our master artists are George Caleb Bingham, Borbon,
and Monet. We learn how to draw a riverboat, a
frog, an otter and a catfish. We listen to some
river songs and read a poem.

Lesson One
- Basic Drawing Using Shading, Shadow and Texture.
We
look at master artists Durer, Charles Peale, and Claude Monet.
We learn how to see how light effects a drawing. We use willow
charcoal and draw an animal starting with basic geometric shapes and
teaching shading, shadow and texture to turn the shapes into a
realistic animal drawing.
March 9
Lesson Two -
One Point Perspective
We look at master work by
Leondardo da Vinci, “The Last Supper,” and other websites that show
one point perspective. We also look at a variety of bridges
including those done by Thomas Cole, Georges Suerat and Camille
Pissaro. Students create a bridge step by step with Sharon Jeffus
that shows atmospheric and one point perspective.
March 16
Lesson
Three - Landscapes in Art
Students look at master works
by Albert Bierdstadt, Grant Wood and Thomas Moran. We use our
pastels to create a landscape. We learn how the artist uses
light and how to make objects look real. We also learn how to
draw and shade a tree in the forground. We put a colorwheel
rainbow in the picture.
March 23
Lesson Four
- Portraits in Art
Students learn how to draw a face
using the classic Greek proportions. We study master portrait
artists in the four style of Realistic (Copely), Impressionistic
(Mary Cassatt), Expressionistic (Becker), and Abstract (Kooning),
and create a person in the four different styles.
March 30
Lesson Five
- Seascapes in Art
Students study art by Winslow Homer,
Washington Allston, and Claude Monet about the sea. We learn
about overlapping and atmospheric perspective. We do a dock in
two point perspective and do an ocean picture.
April 6
Lesson Six -
Still Life in Art
Students study art by Harnett, Monet
and Gauguin. We talk about elements of design and shading with
the complement. We do a finished still life incorporating
principles we learned about shading, shadow, texture and direction
of light from previous lessons.
